CI Recap (9/9/17) – Brewers 15, Cubs 2: Trouble A-Brewin’
The Brewers continued to cut into the Cubs division lead with another win Saturday. Chicago never really had a chance after a pitching meltdown effectively ended the game in the 3rd inning. (box score)
Why The Cubs Lost
Mike Montgomery had his worst start of the season since the last time he faced the Brewers at Wrigley. The Cubs offense was a no-show again, stretching their scoreless streak to 18 innings before Kyle Schwarber’s late solo homer.
Key Moment
Two walks and a single against Mike Montgomery loaded the bases in the 3rd inning. Travis Shaw grounded a double inside the first base line to score two. Justin Grimm relieved Monty and fared no better. A balk, two singles, a double, a squeeze bunt, and a sac fly built the Brewers’ lead to 8-0 by the end of the frame.
Stats That Matter
- Mike Montgomery had serious control issues Saturday: 2 IP, 4 R, 2 H, 4 BB, and 2 K. His biggest problem has always been command of his nasty stuff; if he can really harness it he could be a very good starter.
- I have to tip my hat to Rob Zastryzny, who had to eat it out of the pen: 4 IP, 6 R, 6 H, 4 K, and 3 BB. That is a rough job, but someone has to do it.
- Kyle Schwarber came in late and did a little catching at the end of the game. He also walked and homered, so I expect to see him start on Sunday.
Bottom Line
The Cubs have totally flopped the first two games of this series. Saturday especially was non-competitive. The final game of this series is huge and can push the Cubs back to a three-game division lead. If not, things get really tense.
On Deck
Chicago looks to avoid a costly sweep Sunday at 1:20 CT. Kyle Hendricks battles his doppelgänger, Zach Davies, and the game can be viewed on ABC-7.
