Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (9/29/24): Reds 3, Cubs 0 – Season Ends in Shoutout
The Cubs wrapped up the 2024 season against the Reds at Wrigley Field Sunday afternoon. Not much of anything happened through the first nine innings as the game remained scoreless into the 10th. In the end, Cincinnati surged ahead in extras to hand Chicago a 3-0 shutout defeat in the finale.
Caleb Kilian got the start for the North Siders and pitched well, going five scoreless frames. Hunter Greene matched him as the game moved along quickly with both teams sighting the finish line. The bullpens also were sharp and no one could push any runs across the plate.
There was an unfortunate moment in the 8th inning when Keegan Thompson appeared to injure his right foot and had to leave the game, which is even tougher on the last day of the season. The game moved to the 10th inning still dead blocked at zero.
The Reds finally got to Ethan Roberts in that frame beginning with a two-run triple by Elle De La Cruz. The big shortstop then came home on a single by Tyler Stephenson to make it 3-0. The Cubs went quietly in the bottom half and would lose by the same score. (Box score)
Key Moment
The Cubs had not given up a run to the Reds in 27 innings but they eventually got burned in the 10th and couldn’t respond.
Why the Cubs Lost
They did absolutely nothing on offense in this one.
Stats That Matter
- Luis Vázquez finally got his first career hit on a bunt single in the bottom of the 7th inning.
- Seiya Suzuki singled and finished with a team-best .848 OPS in 2024.
Bottom Line
The Cubs finished with the identical 83-79 record they had in 2023, which is probably not going to be good enough if they want to make the playoffs in 2025. They need to do something bold if things are going to change going forward. Let’s see if they can do it.
On Deck
There are no more games for nearly five months, with February 20 marking the first spring training game of the 2025 season.
