Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (2/21/25): Cubs 7, Dodgers 3 – Amaya Homers in W

The Cubs played their first home spring training game against the Dodgers at Sloan Park on Friday afternoon. Chicago got big contributions from several regulars and managed to win fairly comfortably.

The Cubs broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning as Miguel Amaya cracked a two-run homer that brought the score to 4-1. Three more tallies came home for Chicago after that, including on an RBI double by Kevin Alcántara in the 6th, to increase the lead to 7-1.

The Dodgers homered in the top of the 7th to cut the margin down to 7-3, but that was as close as it got. The North Siders were eventually victorious by that same 7-3 score. (Box score)

Key Moment

The Cubs put up a crooked number in the 3rd inning and never looked back.

Why the Cubs Won

They were able to strand numerous LA baserunners throughout the game.

Stats That Matter

  • Starter Jordan Wicks allowed some of those aforementioned runners but avoided damage: 2 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 2 K, and 0 BB.
  • Ian Happ had two hits and a walk.
  • Amaya singled and was hit by a pitch in addition to his home run.

Bottom Line

The catching position was a big problem for the Cubs early in the 2024 season. Amaya played well down the stretch after a rough beginning, and continuing that into 2025 it will make a huge difference.

On Deck

The White Sox come to Sloan Saturday afternoon at 2:05pm CT. Justin Steele makes his spring debut in a game airing on Marquee.
