Cubs’ Hot Start May Be Sign of Things to Come

The Cubs have started their 2025 Cactus League campaign with a blazing 4-0 record, showcasing a potent blend of offensive firepower and dominant pitching. While these exhibition games don’t impact the regular season standings, the early returns offer a compelling glimpse into this team’s potential.

Hot hitting

The bats have been spectacular, leading the league with 32 runs and 46 hits. Their aggressive approach on the basepaths has also paid off with seven stolen bases, placing them second in MLB. The team’s impressive .331/.403/.504 slash line — ranking second, fifth, and fourth, respectively — underscores what many expect to be a vastly improved offense.

Dynamic center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong is gushing potential. His defensive prowess is well-established, but it’s his hitting many expect to improve significantly. PCA has already notched four hits in six at-bats, including two doubles and a stolen base.

Kevin Alcántara has also impressed, leading the team with five hits in eight at-bats. He’s contributed three runs, three RBI, and a stolen base. Alcantara’s making a case that he’s ready for a spot on the 26-man roster. However, the Cubs will need to weigh the benefits of his development against the risk of limited playing time in a bench role.

Strong Pitching

The pitching staff has been equally impressive, leading the league with 43 strikeouts in 36 innings. Their 3.75 ERA is solid, although the 20 walks issued are something to keep an eye on. Fortunately, they’ve limited the damage to only 15 earned runs.

Justin Steele delivered a stellar performance in his first outing, striking out five batters in two innings while allowing only two hits and no walks. As of now, Steele is the only starting pitcher to see action.

Other notable pitching performances include:

  • Jordan Wicks pitched two scoreless innings, allowing three hits and striking out two.
  • Porter Hodge contributed a scoreless inning with one strikeout.
  • Veteran reliever Ryan Pressly, a key addition to the bullpen, experienced a slightly shaky outing, giving up a run on two hits and a walk before taking a ball off his foot (he’s fine).
  • Ethan Roberts threw a scoreless inning and struck out two.

Early Optimism, Measured Expectations

While we won’t be predicting a World Series victory based on spring training results, the Cubs’ early success is undeniably encouraging. The team appears focused and well-prepared, showcasing a balanced approach in all facets of the game.

Winning, even in exhibition contests, builds momentum and fosters a positive atmosphere. If these early performances are indicative of the team’s potential, Cubs fans have ample reason for optimism. Now the team needs to continue refining its overall performance, setting the stage for a promising season opener in Japan.
