Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (3/8/25): Cubs 9, Mariners 8 – PCA Slams Mariners
The Cubs put on a power display against the Mariners at Sloan Park Saturday afternoon. Chicago hitters blasted four home runs, including two of the bat of Pete Crow-Armstrong, as they hung on for a high-scoring 9-8 victory.
Matthew Boyd made the start for the home team and gave up a two-run homer to Rowdy Tellez in the top of the 2nd inning. The Cubs evened the score in the bottom of the frame when Crow-Armstrong and Miguel Amaya hit back-to-back solo shots off of Seattle pitcher Logan Gilbert.
The M’s went back ahead in the top of the 3rd inning with a pair of runs, but the North Siders responded immediately again with five in the bottom half. Matt Shaw drew a bases-loaded walk to force in a run, then PCA crushed a grand slam to center field to put his team out in front 7-4.
Jorge Polanco cracked a two-run dinger that cut Seattle’s deficit to 7-6 in the 5th. Chicago restored their lead with a two-run bomb off of the bat of Seiya Suzuki in the following frame. The advantage was trimmed down to 9-8 in the 9th, but top prospect Cade Horton was able to close out the win in his first appearance of the spring. (Box score)
Key Moment
Crow-Armstrong’s slam put the Cubs ahead for good on Saturday afternoon.
Why the Cubs Won
A prodigious power display provided just enough offense to earn the victory.
Stats That Matter
- Boyd wasn’t the sharpest on Saturday but he battled: 3.2 IP, 4 R, 4 H, 3 K, and 2 BB.
- Amaya’s huge spring training continues with two more hits.
Bottom Line
It’s very hard not to have massive expectations for a PCA going into the 2025 season. He has been completely electric since the first game of the spring. The regular season is a completely different animal but the sky really is the limit if the speedy outfielder can put on a power display like he did in this one.
