Cubs Part Ways with RHP Cody Poteet, Leaving Bellinger Trade as Pure Salary Dump

Sources confirmed to CI shortly after the news broke that Cody Poteet was designated for assignment on Wednesday. Poteet was acquired in December as part of the Cody Bellinger trade, which has turned out to be a true salary dump. You’ll recall that the Cubs also sent $5 million to the Yankees in that trade.

Poteet appeared in just 3.1 innings during Spring Training, with a 10.80 ERA and one strikeout. Moving on from him is a bit of a surprise, but it makes sense because it clears room for Brad Keller to join the 40-man roster.

While Poteet doesn’t have any real significance or ties to the organization, this move is yet another head-scratcher from Jed Hoyer and his team.
