Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (4/2/25): Cubs 10, Athletics 2 – Suzuki Homers Twice as Chicago Sweeps
The Cubs came into Wednesday with a chance for a sweep of the Athletics in Sacramento. Seiya Suzuki made sure his team did just that with a pair of home runs to lead Chicago to another blowout win.
Carson Kelly continued his unbelievable start to the season with a sacrifice fly off of A’s starter Jeffrey Springs to open the scoring in the top of the 2nd inning. Suzuki followed two batters later, clearing the bases with a deep three-run homer to left, giving the Cubs a 4-0 lead.
Matt Shaw hit a run-scoring single in the 3rd inning to increase the North Siders’ advantage to 5-0. Jameson Taillon made his only big mistake in the bottom of the frame when Brent Rooker homered to cut the deficit down to 5-2.
Suzuki greeted reliever Mitch Spence with his second dinger, this time a solo shot, to open the 4th. Nico Hoerner singled and Pete Crow-Armstrong doubled to knock in two more runs later in the inning to increase the Cubs’ margin to 8-2.
Shaw and Suzuki had RBI singles in the 7th to get Chicago up by double digits on the scoreboard. Taillon pitched six frames to secure a quality start on Wednesday.
Key Moment
The Cubs immediately answered the A’s two runs in the 3rd with three of their own in the 4th. That quick response snuffed out any chance for a comeback Wednesday.
Why the Cubs Won
The offense has been humming all series long, and that helped to take the pressure off the pitching staff.
Stats That Matter
- Taillon had a little issue early in the game with control but was much better than his first outing: 6 IP, 2 R, 4 H, 7 K, and 3 BB.
- Suzuki is just fine after his slow start and had five RBIs Wednesday.
- Shaw is starting to look more comfortable with two hits and a walk.
- PCA also got on base a couple of times after scuffling a bit early.
Bottom Line
The Cubs scored 35 runs during their three-game sweep in Sacramento, which clearly plays well. Suzuki and Kyle Tucker are a formidable pair in the middle of the lineup. That has to be scary for Chicago’s future opponents. With a difficult schedule coming up, sweeping this series and ending with a winning road trip was huge. (Box score)
