Cubs Reportedly Sign Infielder Nicky Lopez

Former White Sox infielder Nicky Lopez arrived at Wrigley Field prior to Wednesday’s game against the Dodgers and Shane Riordan of 670 The Score reports that he has indeed signed a major league deal. Lopez was in camp with the Cubs, but opted to seek other opportunities after failing to make the roster. He played briefly with the Angels before being DFA’d and electing free agency, hence his return to Chicago.

The Cubs have struggled to find a regular third baseman, using five players there already this season. Though his bat isn’t likely to contribute much, Lopez has displayed a solid glove at multiple infield positions and should be able to play more than competent defense at the hot corner.

More to come on this and the corresponding move, but the early presumption is that Gage Workman has been DFA’d. Vidal Bruján looked a little hobbled after scoring the winning run last night, but he reportedly looked fine when he showed up to the ballpark around the same time at Lopez.
