Chicago Cubs vs Colorado Rockies – Series Preview (May 26-28): Overview, Game and Broadcast Info, Starting Pitchers, W2W4
The Cubs (32-21) won their series against the Reds thanks to a pair of huge comeback victories that featured a whopping 18 runs scored after the 6th inning. The offense overcame three shaky starting pitching performances that put Chicago behind early in every game.
The North Siders have performed well in this soft portion of the schedule with a 9-3 record in contests against the Marlins, White Sox, and Reds. Now they return to Wrigley Field for a three-game set against the truly dreadful Rockies, starting with a Memorial Day matinee.
Colorado (9-44) is losing games at a faster pace than the record-setting White Sox did in 2024 when they posted the most losses in MLB history. To say the last few years have been a disaster in lower downtown Denver is an understatement. The major league roster is terrible, and the minor league system is hardly better.
The Rockies’ offense has the third-lowest team OPS in baseball at .647 despite playing in the hitters’ paradise of Coors Field. Catcher Hunter Goodman (102 wRC+) and outfielder Jordan Beck (123 wRC+) are the only real bright spots in a really bad lineup.
Colorado’s pitching staff has the highest ERA in baseball, sitting at 5.73, and the starting rotation’s ghastly 6.71 ERA is the main culprit. The bullpen is decidedly better (4.48 ERA), with Jake Bird and Zach Agnos having standout seasons so far.
The Cubs have to avoid sleepwalking through these games. The Yankees lost a game against Colorado this weekend, and baseball is unpredictable. That being said, Chicago’s hitters should be able to feast on the Rockies’ terrible starting pitching. This is an excellent chance to keep moving further above .500 and getting into a very strong playoff position.
