Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (5/27/25): Cubs 4, Rockies 3 F/11 – Shaw Walks Off Rockies in 11th
The Cubs and Rockies battled in the second game of their series at Wrigley Field Tuesday night. It was another low-scoring affair that had to go to extra innings before Chicago finally pulled out a walk-off win in the 11th.
The North Siders went ahead against Germán Márquez in the bottom of the 3rd when they loaded the bases with one out. Seiya Suzuki ripped an RBI single and Pete Crow-Armstrong grounded out to score another run and put the home team up 2-0.
Cade Horton started for the Cubs and looked very good, but he allowed a run-scoring single to Ryan McMahon in the 4th. Horton’s only other mistake came to open up the 7th when Brenton Doyle hit a game-tying solo homer that ended the rookie hurler’s night.
The score remained tied all the way to the top of the 11th inning when Doyle drove home go-ahead run on a groundout to second base to make it 3-2 Rockies. The Cubs responded in the bottom of the frame with an RBI single from Michael Busch and then the game-winning bloop single by Matt Shaw for a 4-3 victory. (Box score)
Key Moment
Chicago kept Colorado from adding any insurance runs in the 11th to keep them within shouting distance.
Why the Cubs Won
The pitching staff did a good job to keep them in the game until the offense finally showed some life in extra innings.
Stats That Matter
- Definitely Horton’s best performance so far: 6 IP, 2 R, 4 H, 6 K, 1 BB.
- Kyle Tucker had two hits and two walks on Tuesday.
- Shaw had two more runs and made another outstanding defensive play.
Bottom Line
That definitely was not an easy victory for the Cubs, but they were able to secure it. Horton and Shaw are a big part of the future, and they are starting to have an impact right now. Getting a sweep here would be a nice sign that the problems with finishing off series earlier in the year are starting to go away.
On Deck
The Cubs attempt to complete the aforementioned sweep Wednesday at 7:05pm CT. Matthew Boyd takes the mound against Tanner Gordon in a contest broadcast on Marquee with radio coverage on 670 The Score.
