Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (6/7/25): Cubs 6, Tigers 1 – Handful of Homers Lead to W

The Cubs and the Tigers met in the second game of the series at Comerica Park on Saturday afternoon. Chicago crushed five home runs and went on to even the series.

Seiya Suzuki got things going for the North Siders with a solo shot against opener Tyler Holton in the top of the 1st inning. Jameson Taillon was sharp early and kept Detroit off the scoreboard through the first four frames Saturday.

Michael Busch jumped on a first-pitch hanging slider from Keider Montero for a two-run homer to give the Cubs a 3-0 lead in the 5th. Zach McKinstry tripled in the bottom of the frame and came home on a fielder’s choice to cut the Tigers’ deficit to 3-1.

Chicago kept the homer barrage going in the 7th with solo shots by Pete Crow-Armstrong and Matt Shaw. Suzuki cracked his second dinger to make it a 6-1 game in the 8th.

Taillon eventually went seven frames, allowing only the one run, and the North Siders went on to win by the same 6-1 total. (Box score)

Key Moment

The home run by Busch gave the Cubs a much-needed cushion after they had been protecting a one-run lead most of the afternoon.

Why the Cubs Won

They had a power surge with five homers and got another quality start.

Stats That Matter

  • Taillon has now made four very good starts in a row: 7 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 5 K, 1 BB.
  • Suzuki pounded his two home runs in this one.
  • Busch just keeps making things happen this season.

Bottom Line

It was nice to see the Cubs offense bounce back after not being able to get the big hits on Friday. It’s been very valuable to have Taillon step up and pitch so well with the other injuries in the rotation. The Cubs have held their own with one of the best teams in baseball through two games.

On Deck

The rubber match of the series is Sunday afternoon at 12:40pm CT. Cade Horton faces off against Jack Flaherty in a contest available on Marquee with a radio feed on 670 The Score.
