Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (7/6/25): Cubs 11, Cardinals 0 – Birds Blanked in Prime Time
The Cubs and Cardinals met in the deciding game of their series at Wrigley Field on Sunday night after an hour-long rain delay. Chicago wasted no time jumping all over their rivals, scoring early and often in a blowout victory.
Pete Crow-Armstrong got the North Siders on the board against Erick Fedde with an RBI single in the bottom of the 1st. Kyle Tucker brought home two more on a hit with the bases loaded in the 2nd to bring the score to 3-0.
The Cubs exploded for five runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning to put the game away. Reese McGuire began the onslaught with an RBI single that was followed by a groundout, an error, and a sacrifice fly to make it 7-0. Seiya Suzuki then tacked on an RBI double to put his team ahead by a snowman.
That was more than enough offense for All-Star starter Matthew Boyd, who piled up nine strikeouts in five scoreless innings of work. Nico Hoerner knocked in another run with a triple in the 4th and scored on a groundout to give Chicago a 10-0 lead.
Suzuki stuck it to the All-Star voters who snubbed him with his 25th home run in the 5th to make it 11-0. Jordan Wicks returned to the big club and pitched three innings of relief as the Cubs rolled to victory. (Box score)
Key Moment
The Cardinals had two runners on base with one out in the top of the 1st and Boyd struck out the next two hitters to end the inning. St. Louis never threatened for the rest of the game.
Why the Cubs Won
The lineup exploded early to bury the Cardinals and make for a stress-free final few innings.
Stats That Matter
- Boyd is very deserving of the All-Star selection: 5 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 9 K, 1 BB.
- Hoerner ended up just a home run shy of the cycle.
- Michael Busch got on base four more times Sunday, wrapping up a monster series.
Bottom Line
The Cubs handled business, going 5-1 on the homestand and gaining ground on the rival Cardinals. Whatever minor funk the lineup was in during June has vanished in July. Chicago has put itself in an excellent position for the stretch run and can make additional upgrades at the trade deadline. The arrow is definitely pointing up for Craig Counsell and company.
On Deck
The Cubs have Monday off before starting a series at Target Field against the Twins on Tuesday at 6:40pm CT. Shōta Imanaga faces off against Simeon Woods Richardson in a matchup broadcast on Marquee with a radio feed on 670 The Score.
