Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (7/11/25): Yankees 11, Cubs 0 – Cody Bellinger Revenge Game
The Cubs and Yankees began their series at the stadium in the Bronx on Friday night. It quickly became clear it was not going to be Chicago’s night with New York winning easily thanks to a big assist from a familiar face.
Spot starter Chris Flexen successfully navigated the first two innings without damage before the Yanks got to him in the bottom of the 3rd. Aaron Judge hit a sacrifice fly before old friend Cody Bellinger whacked a two-run homer that barely cleared the right field wall to give the home team a 3-0 lead.
The North Siders were baffled by another left-handed starter, Carlos Rodón, who kept them scoreless through eight frames. Bellinger did even more damage to his former employers when he hit a longer two-run homer off of Caleb Thielbar to put the Yankees ahead 5-0.
Jordan Wicks took over for mop up duty in the 6th and gave up six runs, including Bellinger’s third homer of the game in the 8th. The Cubs finally, mercifully went down to a 11-0 defeat. (Box score)
Key Moment
Bellinger’s first home run gave the Yankees plenty of cushion with Rodón dominating on the mound.
Why the Cubs Lost
The offense continues to scuffle against lefties and could not muster anything Friday.
Stats That Matter
- Flexen was fine in a semi-opener role but he had no margin for error with the offensive struggles: 4 IP, 3 R, 3 H, 2 K, 3 BB.
Bottom Line
This was a game that looked on paper like it was going to be a tough one for the Cubs. Sometimes things don’t follow the script, but they certainly did Friday. The Cubs really do need to make a move to find a right-handed hitter who can do damage against lefties.
On Deck
Game two of the series is Saturday afternoon at 12:05pm CT. It is an excellent pitching matchup between Matthew Boyd and Max Fried in a contest available on MLB Network and Marquee with a radio feed on 670 The Score.
