Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (7/23/25): Royals 8, Cubs 4 – Shaw, PCA Homer in Loss

The Cubs and the Royals met in the deciding game of their series at a hot and humid Wrigley Field Wednesday afternoon. Kansas City took full advantage of the weather conditions, pounding four home runs and winning decisively.

The Royals went ahead immediately when Vinnie Pasquantino hit a two-run shot against Colin Rea in the top of the 1st inning after Seiya Suzuki biffed a fly ball to put a runner on second. Chicago got one back on Seth Lugo on an RBI single by Reese McGuire in the 2nd. The road team wasted no time responding with another two-run dinger off the bat Salvador Perez to make it 4-1 in the 3rd.

The North Siders pulled within 4-2 on an RBI double by Carson Kelly in the bottom of the frame. Pasquantino struck again with his second two-run jack of the game in the 5th and it was 6-2.

Drew Pomeranz allowed the fourth two-run homer to Kansas City in the 6th when Tyler Tolbert increased the margin to 8-2. Matt Shaw and Pete Crow-Armstrong each had solo shots late, but it didn’t make a difference as the Cubs lost 8-4. (Box score)

Key Moment

Pasquantino’s second homer really opened up the game and the Cubs could never get close again.

Why the Cubs Lost

The Royals took advantage of the wind blowing out, and that made the difference in this one.

Stats That Matter

  • Rea struggled on Wednesday after several quality starts: 5 IP, 6 R, 5 ER, 6 H, 3 K, 0 BB.
  • Shaw has three home runs in his last four games.

Bottom Line

It’s obviously disappointing to lose a series at home to an opponent with a losing record but that is going to happen. The important thing for the Cubs is to come right back and win the next one. Chicago could also use a boost from a trade with the deadline a week away.
