Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (7/30/25): Cubs 10, Brewers 3 – Mo Baller Boosts Offense
The Cubs and Brewers met in the finale of their series at American Family Field on Wednesday afternoon. Chicago finally came through with runners in scoring position to salvage a victory and avoid the sweep
Michael Busch got things started in style with a solo home run on the first pitch of the game by Freddy Peralta. Milwaukee responded immediately in the bottom of the frame when William Contreras went deep against Shōta Imanaga to tie the score.
The North Siders put together a big rally against Peralta in the top of the 3rd, scoring four runs to take the lead. Pete Crow-Armstrong had a hustle double to bring home the first tally, and newly recalled Moisés Ballesteros later cleared the bases with a three-run double that made it 5-1.
Imanaga was much sharper than in his previous start, but he did give up another homer to Contreras and a sacrifice fly to Sal Frelick that got the Brewers within 5-3 in the 5th. The Cubs immediately answered in the next frame with doubles by Dansby Swanson and Kyle Tucker that scored three and put the road team ahead 8-3.
Chicago added two more insurance runs in the 9th inning on a Swanson sac fly and a solo homer by Ian Happ to make the final margin 10-3. (Box score)
Key Moment
After so much frustration with runners in scoring position the first two games, it was huge for Ballesteros to come through with the bases loaded in the 3rd. That turned out to be all the offense the Cubs would need.
Why the Cubs Won
The lineup was very productive and it was a decent starting pitching performance.
Stats That Matter
- Imanaga had his velocity back and was pretty good Wednesday: 5 IP, 3 R, 5 H, 8 K, 0 BB.
- Tucker got on base four times and is starting to get going at the plate.
- PCA had three hits, including a pair of doubles.
Bottom Line
This series obviously could have gone better for the Cubs, but they did what they needed to avoid being swept. They are just a game back with five matchups against Milwaukee at Wrigley Field remaining in August. Now attention turns to what, if any, moves Chicago makes at the trade deadline tomorrow afternoon.
