Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (8/14/25): Blue Jays 2, Cubs 1 – Offense Wastes Boyd’s Outstanding Effort
The Cubs and Blue Jays played the finale of their three-game series Thursday afternoon at Rogers Center. Chicago squandered an outstanding pitching performance and suffered another one-run defeat.
Both starting pitchers, Matthew Boyd and Max Scherzer, were rolling early and neither team produced anything in the first five innings. The North Siders grabbed the lead on a solo home run by Michael Busch in the top of the 6th.
Boyd made his only mistake in the bottom of the 7th inning when Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a go-ahead two-run homer to make it 2-1 Blue Jays. The Cubs had a glorious scoring opportunity with runners on second and third and nobody out in the top of the 8th, but three consecutive strikeouts stranded both.
Toronto closed out the game in the 9th to hand Chicago a third consecutive series loss. (Box score)
Key Moment
The Cubs went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position, and the inability to make contact with the tying run on third base in the 8th likely decided the game.
Why the Cubs Lost
The hitters continue to struggle mightily and another quality start went for naught.
Stats That Matter
- Boyd did a great job and did not deserve a loss: 7 IP, 2 R, 2 H, 5 K, 1 BB.
- Nico Hoerner had two singles.
- Owen Caissie was robbed of a double in his first at-bat and went 0-for-4 in his major league debut.
Bottom Line
The Cubs are getting dangerously close to going on a real skid if they don’t start hitting again soon. Recent seasons have gone that way for Chicago and they need one of the bats that were so productive in the first half to return to form quickly.
On Deck
The Cubs return to Wrigley Field for three games with the Pirates starting Friday at 1:20pm CT. Colin Rea gets the start against a yet-to-be-named Pittsburgh pitcher in a contest broadcast on MLB Network and Marquee with a radio feed on 670 The Score.
