Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (8/19/25, Game 1): Cubs 6, Brewers 4 – Big Game for Caissie

The Cubs and Brewers met in the in the second attempt at a day-night doubleheader on an overcast Tuesday afternoon at Wrigley Field after Monday’s nightcap got washed out. Chicago got a huge performance from their rookie outfielder to get the twin bill off to a winning start.

Owen Caissie put the North Siders in front with a two-run single off of Chad Patrick in the bottom of the 1st. Willi Castro hit a huge three-run homer against Patrick in the 3rd inning to give the home team a 5-0 lead.

Milwaukee began chipping away on starter Matthew Boyd with a solo home run off the bat of Christian Yelich in the 4th. Sal Frelick had an RBI single to cut the deficit to 5-2 in the top of the 5th.

Brice Turang singled home a run to knock Boyd out of the game in the 6th inning. Brad Keller took over and gave up a second RBI single to Frelick before escaping with the Cubs still in front 5-4.

Caissie blasted his first career homer against Shelby Miller to provide Chicago with an important insurance run in the bottom of the frame. Daniel Palencia returned to action and got the save to preserve the 6-4 victory. (Box score)

Key Moment

Palencia got William Contreras to hit a ground ball to third with two on and one out in the 9th that turned into a game-ending double play.

Why the Cubs Won

The offense put up six runs, which was enough to hold off the mighty Brewers’ comeback attempt.

Stats That Matter

  • Boyd wasn’t his sharpest but was picked up by his teammates on Tuesday: 5.1 IP, 4 R, 6 H, 3 K, 3 BB.
  • Caissie had his first three RBI in the majors.
  • Castro picked a very good time to have his first home run in Chicago.

Bottom Line

At this point in the season, every win is big. The Cubs could really use a boost from a young player like Caissie to inject some energy into the lineup. This game could be a good start to something bigger if they can keep it rolling.
