Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (8/31/25): Rockies 6, Cubs 5 – Walk-Off Prevents Sweep
The Cubs and Rockies met in the finale of their series at a sunny Coors Field Sunday afternoon. Chicago fell behind and battled back before suffering a defeat in the final at-bat to miss out on a sweep.
The North Siders grabbed the lead when Seiya Suzuki hit a two-run double off of Tanner Gordon in the top of the 3rd. Colorado responded against Matthew Boyd in the bottom of the frame with a pair of RBI singles by Tyler Freeman and Brenton Doyle to even the score at 2-2.
The Rockies went ahead in the 4th inning with an RBI triple by catcher Braxton Fulford, followed by a bloop single from Orlando Arcia that made it a 4-2 game. Doyle added a sacrifice fly off of Porter Hodge in the bottom of the 7th to increase the advantage to 5-2.
The Cubs answered back dramatically in the 8th when Ian Happ took Luis Peralta deep for a game-tying three-run homer. Colorado would have the last laugh, however, when Mickey Moniak hit a walk-off triple against Daniel Palencia to win 6-5. (Box score)
Key Moment
When Moniak’s hit went into the corner in right field at the expansive Coors Field, it was going to be almost impossible for Kyle Tucker to get the ball back in before Ryan Ritter scored and the game was over.
Why the Cubs Lost
The Rockies found plenty of holes on some weak contact and they just could not score quite enough to overcome it.
Stats That Matter
- Boyd did a good job considering the environment: 6 IP, 4 R, 6 H, 5 K, 1 BB.
- Tucker had three hits and looked very good in the series.
- Michael Busch got on twice and scored a pair of runs.
Bottom Line
The Cubs had a winning road trip, but not successful enough to get back into the division race. They have a very soft schedule down the stretch with a bunch of home games, which should provide a good opportunity to build some momentum going into the playoffs. It’s a chance for Chicago if they can step it up these final 25 contests.
On Deck
The North Siders return to Wrigley to begin a series with the Braves on Labor Day at 3:05pm CT. Colin Rea goes up against Spencer Strider in a game available on Marquee and 670 The Score.
