Report: Cubs Promoting OF Prospect Kevin Alcántara

According to a report from Mike Rodriguez on X, the Cubs are promoting Kevin Alcántara. Ranked at No. 5 on MLB Pipeline’s list of the top 30 Cubs prospects, Alcántara actually debuted late last season and picked up a single in 10 plate appearances.

Alcántara could very well be one of the September call-ups activated on Monday, with his outfield versatility allowing him to play multiple positions. He has an .819 OPS in Triple-A this year, along with 17 home runs and 10 stolen bases over 430 plate appearances. Even if he’s used as infrequently as Owen Caissie has been, the youth movement in Chicago generates some excitement.

Ed. note: Tommy Birch, I-Cubs beat reporter for the Des Moines Register, confirmed that Alcántara is heading to Chicago to join the Cubs on Monday. Sending Caissie back to Iowa to clear a spot for Carlos Santana makes a ton of sense, as he can get regular playing time over the next three weeks with Alcántara taking over his bench role.

The wrinkle here is that Caissie was activated just before the cutoff for rookie eligibility, which is lost with either 45 days on the active roster or 130 at-bats. Caissie would hit the 45-day mark on September 27, one day before the end of the regular season. Sending him back down preserves his rookie eligibility and leaves the Cubs in line for prospect promotion incentives should they have him up early enough next season to earn a full year of service time.
