Cubs Recall Jordan Wicks, Option Porter Hodge
With just two more series at home left after they finish the weekend in Cincinnati, the Cubs need to see what their pitching staff is going to look like for the postseason. It looked for a while as though Porter Hodge would be in the mix after he gave up just one earned run with 11 strikeouts and three walks over eight appearances. But two of those walks came in one outing, then he walked another and gave up two tanks in Cincinnati on Friday night.
Between that and his overall struggles with health and consistency this season, the Cubs decided to option Hodge back to Iowa for the last bit of the season. He will likely go from there to Arizona to stay hot in case he’s needed back with the big club. To fill the open roster spot, the Cubs recalled lefty Jordan Wicks, who has experienced his own hardships at the MLB level.
The Chicago Cubs today recalled left-handed pitcher Jordan Wicks from Triple-A Iowa. In a corresponding move, right-handed pitcher Porter Hodge has been optioned to Triple-A.
Wicks, 26, has gone 3-4 with two saves and a 3.55 ERA (28 ER/71.0 IP) in 20 games with the I-Cubs in 2025, all but four of which were starts. He has allowed one-or-fewer [sic] earned runs in six of his last seven Triple-A outings since July 30, posting a 2.38 ERA (6 ER/22.2 IP) with a 0.93 WHIP during the span. In six appearances with the Cubs this season, Wicks has suffered one loss with an 8.71 ERA (10 ER/10.1 IP) and eight strikeouts. In his previous stint with the Cubs, he threw 2.0 innings, allowing one run, on August 26 and 27.
Hodge, 24, is 2-2 with two saves (in five opportunities) and a 6.27 ERA (23 ER/33.0 IP) in 36 games with the Cubs this season.
The Cubs play the Cincinnati Reds tonight at 5:40 p.m. CT at Great American Ball Park in a game that can be seen on Marquee Sports Network and heard on 670 the Score and, in Spanish, on WRTO 1200 AM.
