The Rundown Lite: Suzuki Suffers Knee Injury, WBC Upsets, Brown’s Sinker

I’m short on both time and news, so let’s just sprint this out.

  • Seiya Suzuki limped off the field after he was caught stealing to end the 1st inning in Japan’s loss to Venezuela in the WBC quarterfinals. There’s been no imaging yet, or at least we aren’t aware of any diagnosis beyond right knee discomfort, but it’s a good sign that he was able to walk off under his own power.

  • It wasn’t all bad news for the Cubs, as Daniel Palencia was on the bump firing triple-digits to close out the win.

  • Saturday featured two upsets, with Italy hanging on after jumping all over Puerto Rico in their matchup. I’m not sure Francisco Cervelli‘s team has the arms to see this thing through after yesterday’s contest resembled a travel ball tourney in which pitch limits force coaches to throw anyone who happens to be available.
  • Ben Brown looked good in four innings of work against the Rockies, throwing his new sinker 11 times. He developed the pitch by working with sinker specialist Clay Holmes over the offseason. Cubs VP of pitching Tyler Zombro helped to connect the two pitchers, as Holmes is a Tread Athletics athlete.
  • Having four legitimate pitches will make Brown much more of a weapon regardless of his role. He figures to be a multi-inning reliever if he breaks camp on the active roster, but he’ll get occasional starts as the season goes along.
  • Paul Skenes and Team USA square off tonight for a trip to the finals on the line. Based on what happened yesterday, the winner of this one has to be the clear favorite to win it all.
  • This might be the shortest Rundown I’ve ever done. Go enjoy what’s left of your weekend.
