Matthew Boyd to Undergo Knee Surgery, Return Timeline TBD

You can’t blame this one on the trainers. Matthew Boyd suffered an injury while playing with his kids on Wednesday morning and will undergo surgery to repair a torn left meniscus. The Cubs won’t have a timeline for his return until after the surgery, but he is likely to be shelved for several weeks. A more serious repair could result in months of recovery that could cost the rest of the season.

I don’t even want to think about what’s next for this pitching staff.

The Cubs have called up 32-year-old righty reliever Trent Thornton, who has pitched 401 innings for the Blue Jays and Mariners, to replace Boyd on the active roster. Thornton has appeared in four games with one start for the Iowa Cubs, and he has a 3.18 ERA with five strikeouts, three walks, and two homers allowed. He has a career 4.38 ERA over 235 MLB appearances, most of which have come out of the bullpen.
