Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (5/30/26): Cubs 6, Cardinals 1 – Brown, PCA Star in W
The Cubs got back in the win column on Saturday night against the Cardinals after dropping the opener. The key factor in this one was the performance of starting pitcher Ben Brown who silenced the fans at Busch Stadium through most of the night with an outstanding effort.
St. Louis grabbed the lead in the bottom of the 4th inning when first baseman Alec Burleson hit an RBI single. His counterpart, Michael Busch, returned the favor with a run-scoring single off of Kyle Leahy in the 5th and Chicago tied the game.
The North Siders broke the deadlock against the Cardinals’ bullpen in the 6th, scoring twice. Nico Hoerner singled with the bases loaded and Busch hit a sacrifice fly to make it 3-1. Brown was sharp all night, eventually going seven innings with just the single tally allowed.
The Cubs added insurance in the final innings, beginning with a long solo homer by Pete Crow-Armstrong against Gordon Graceffo in the 8th. Two more came home on a wild pitch and an RBI single by PCA in the 9th as the road team completed the 6-1 victory. (Box score)
Key Moment
The Cardinals had runners on first and second with one out in the bottom of the 6th, trailing 3-1. Brown got Ivan Herrera to hit a ground ball to Alex Bregman at third, who stepped on the base and threw across to complete a double play to end the threat.
Why the Cubs Won
They got a terrific effort from their starter and scored five runs after the 5th inning, which is a very good way to win a lot of games.
Stats That Matter
- Brown has easily been Chicago’s best pitcher since entering the rotation: 7 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 6 K, and 1 BB.
- A monster game for PCA with four hits, including a homer and a double.
- Hoerner also had a pair of singles.
Bottom Line
Brown has always had the stuff to be an excellent starting pitcher, and he seems to have figured it out. The Cubs are very glad he has, because the rest of the rotation has been a complete mess the past month. A win on Sunday would mean a 4-3 road trip, which would be very acceptable after the recent skid.
On Deck
The rubber match of the series is Sunday night at 6:20pm CT. Jordan Wicks takes the mound against Matthew Liberatore in a game televised exclusively on NBC with a radio feed on The Score.
