Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (6/5/26): Giants 18, Cubs 3 – Cabrera Crushed in Blowout Loss
The Cubs got blasted by the Giants in the first game of their series at Wrigley Field Friday afternoon. Edward Cabrera returned from injury and got lit up for eight runs before finally being yanked in the 3rd inning. The road team kept going from there and had 18 on the scoreboard by the end of the afternoon.
San Francisco began the scoring with a two-run homer by Willy Adames in the top of the 1st inning. Matt Chapman put the game away when he hit a grand slam in the 3rd, and Casey Schmitt ended Cabrera’s day with a two-run shot later in the frame that made it 8-0.
The Giants never took their foot off the gas, eventually hitting seven home runs and moving well into double digits. Chicago pushed across three meaningless runs and lost by a whopping 18-3 tally. (Box score)
Key Moment
Cabrera deflected a potential double play grounder in the 3rd inning that would have ended the frame with the score 2-0. Instead, it went for an infield single and Chapman immediately followed with the grand slam.
Why the Cubs Lost
A terrible outing by the starting pitcher gave them absolutely no chance.
Stats That Matter
- Cabrera’s ERA went up nearly a run to 4.99 after his disaster.
- Pedro Ramírez had a couple of hits after coming in partway through the game.
Bottom Line
Any potential momentum from the walk-off win on Thursday was quickly erased by this performance. The Cubs’ home run problem is completely out of control at this point and they have now given up more than any team in baseball. Almost everyone on the pitching staff is being victimized right now. It’s just not sustainable and if something doesn’t change, it’s going to doom the entire season.
On Deck
Chicago attempts to bounce back in game two of the series Saturday at 1:20pm CT. Ben Brown is up against Landen Roupp in a matchup airing on Marquee with a radio feed on The Score.
