Cubs Recall Javier Assad, Option Ethan Roberts

The Chicago Cubs today recalled right-handed pitcher Javier Assad from Triple-A Iowa. In a corresponding move, right-handed pitcher Ethan Roberts was optioned to Triple-A Iowa.

Assad, 28, is 3-1 with a 5.88 ERA (17 ER/26.0 IP), 14 strikeouts, seven walks, and a 1.27 WHIP in eight appearances, three starts, with the Cubs this season. He allowed one run or fewer in six of his eight outings (0.93 ERA, 2 ER/19.1 IP), including in two of his starts. In five starts with the I-Cubs in 2025, the righty is 0-2 with a 7.31 ERA (13 ER/16.0 IP) with 14 strikeouts and nine walks.

The Tijuana, Mexico, native, who started the season in Triple-A before being recalled on April 6, was optioned on May 16.

Roberts, 28, is 0-1 with a 1.96 ERA (4 ER/18.1 IP) in 14 relief appearances with the Cubs this season.

The Cubs play the San Francisco Giants today at 1:20 p.m. at Wrigley Field in a game that can be seen on Marquee Sports Network and heard on 104.3 the Score and, in Spanish, on TUDN 106.7.
