Cubs Claim RHP Bryse Wilson from Phillies, DFA RHP Christian Roa

It’s not quite rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic, but the Cubs have made yet another pitching move as Jed Hoyer continues to cycle through arms in an attempt to keep the minimum number of available pitchers in the organization. The latest move is the acquisition of righty Bryse Wilson off waivers from the Phillies after he was designated for assignment two days ago.

Wilson is perhaps best known from his time in Atlanta, but he also pitched for the Pirates, Brewers, and White Sox before a brief stint in Philly. A multi-inning reliever with 57 starts out of 164 total MLB appearances, Wilson is a pitch-to-contact guy who leans on his 93 mph sinker and 89 mph cutter. You’d expect him to get a lot of grounders, but that isn’t the case.

On the surface, this looks like a move to add a little length to the organization after losing two starters in the space of a few hours. The revolving door is going to keep moving for a while yet, and it may even pick up speed as we get into July.

The Chicago Cubs today claimed right-handed pitcher Bryse Wilson off waivers from the Philadelphia Phillies. In a corresponding move, right-handed pitcher Christian Roa was designated for assignment. The 40-man roster stands at 40.

Wilson, 28, has split the 2026 season between Triple-A Lehigh Valley and the Phillies, pitching in 12 games (11 starts) with Lehigh Valley and making one relief appearance with the Phillies. The righthander tossed 2.0 scoreless innings on June 18 vs. the Mets. He signed with the Phillies as a minor league free agent in December 2025.

The six-foot two-inch Wilson has appeared in 164 career major league games (57 starts) with the Braves (2018-21), Pirates (2022), Brewers (2023-24), White Sox (2025) and Phillies (2026), going 20-23 with a 4.80 ERA (247 ER/463.0 IP) and four saves. Wilson in 2023 was named the Brewers Unsung Hero by the Milwaukee chapter of the BBWAA after going 6-0 with a 2.58 ERA (22 ER/76.2 IP) and three saves in 53 games in relief. That season from Aug. 15-Sept. 29, he allowed just one earned run in his final 15 appearances, posting a 0.42 ERA (1 ER/21.2 IP) during the stretch.

Wilson was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the fourth round in 2016. The righthander is a graduate of Orange High School in Hillsborough, N.C.
