Kevin Gausman, Clay Holmes to Start This Weekend in KC

Though he didn’t lay out his exact plans, Craig Counsell made it pretty clear in talking with reporters on Tuesday that Kevin Gausman and Clay Holmes will (probably) start on Friday and Saturday in Kansas City. Gausman’s regular turn would have been on Thursday, but pushing him back allows him to acclimate a little more while avoiding making his first start against his old team.

Holmes is still on the 60-day IL as he works back from a broken fibula, but he’s made three minor league rehab starts and will be ready to go this weekend. His activation will require a personnel move, so the Cubs will hold off as long as possible before that happens. Provided he’s able to shake off the rust, having his heavy groundball repertoire in front of the league’s best defense should be very fun to watch.
