Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (8/18/26): Cubs 4, White Sox 3 – Bregman Gets Clutch Hits to Tie, Walk Off
The Cubs and White Sox met in the second game of their series Tuesday night in a game that featured another dramatic finish. The home team had a second consecutive walk-off victory after waiting out a 90-minute rain delay at Wrigley.
Pete Crow-Armstrong once again led off the bottom of the 1st with a solo homer against opener Bryan Hudson, and Michael Busch went deep later in the frame to give the North Siders a 2-0 advantage. The South Siders got one back against Kevin Gausman in the top of the 2nd on an RBI single by Drew Romo.
Munetaka Murakami tied the game with an opposite-field solo home run to left in the 3rd. The Sox took the lead on an RBI double by Tristan Peters in the 4th that made it 3-2. The Cubs answered back against Grant Taylor in the bottom of the 7th when Alex Bregman hit a run-scoring single to even things up.
The North Siders put together a rally in the bottom of the 9th, beginning with a double by Carson Kelly. With two outs and two on, Bregman hit the first pitch he saw from Trevor Richards right back up the middle for a game-winning RBI single. (Box score)
Key Moment
Both of Bregman’s big hits came with runners in scoring position and two men out, which is something the Cubs have struggled with at times.
Why the Cubs Won
The bullpen did a great job keeping the White Sox in check, and a couple of timely knocks made the difference.
Stats That Matter
- Gausman had an uneven game and then had to come out with a cramp in his non-pitching hand in the 5th inning: 4.1 IP, 3 R, 7 H, 5 K, and 2 BB.
- Crow-Armstrong had two walks to go with his homer.
- Javier Assad pitched three scoreless innings after taking over for Gausman.
Bottom Line
After a slow start, Bregman has hit his stride and it’s been a major help to the Cubs. After losing a series to the Cardinals, it was good to see them immediately answer back and take this series. The last two nights have felt like playoff baseball at Wrigley Field.
On Deck
The home squad goes for a sweep Wednesday afternoon at 1:20pm CT. Clay Holmes is on the mound in a game televised on Marquee with a radio feed on The Score.
