Justin Steele Scheduled for Wednesday Bullpen, Could Be Weekend Option

Alex Bregman might not be the only improbable weekend return for the Cubs, as Craig Counsell said Tuesday that Justin Steele could be an option for the Boston series. That feels like something they might do if their postseason position has been secured and they don’t necessarily need the lefty to be an “out-getter,” as Counsell likes to say. Depending on how things go with the weather situation, the Cubs could be forced to play a doubleheader and/or play on Monday.

Having a fresh arm would come in handy, especially if it allows them to keep other relievers fresh for the bullpen. This could also be a little gamesmanship from Counsell, not that it’s really necessary with Boston already locked into their playoff spot. What we know for certain is that Steele will throw a bullpen on Wednesday, after which the Cubs will evaluate his readiness.

I would be less surprised by an announcement that he’s being shut down, similar to what we saw with Shelby Miller, but the recovery timelines are very different. We may not know more until at least Thursday, so stay tuned.
